X2O Release 5.5

X2O will update the X2O platform to release 5.5. This update includes additional functionality and an improved user interface. Note that this update will only impact X2O Cloud or Hosted customers. If your X2O platform is installed on your premises, you will not be impacted by this update. Contact your X2O Sales Representative or X2O Support for more information on upgrading your current on-premise version.

Test in sandbox

We suggest that you preview and test the new version of the X2O platform in a non-production environment before the production update happens. This will enable you to become familiar with the new user interface. To request access to the sandbox, email X2O Support.

Upgrading your X2O Players

X2O Support will work with you to update the X2O Player software (1.9.37) on all your players. Ideally this should be done before the X2O Server upgrade, however it can happen afterwards. Note that it will need to be completed by the end of November 2014 at the latest. This Player version will provide you with improved performance, as well as provide access to new features made available through the X2O Server upgrade.

What is new with the X2O Portal?

This release gives the X2O Portal a new modern look and a streamlined graphical-user interface with solid color, flat-design elements, grid-style layouts, reduced clutter, and a task bar that always appears at the top of each page.

The X2O Portal has a brand new landing page that opens after you first log in. It asks the question, “What would you like to do today?” Each button on the page describes the different applications available to you. Click one and see what happens!

The task bar has a navigation menu that launches and switches between X2O Portal applications, a Network drop-down that lets you switch to a different network, and a personal drop-down to access your user account settings or sign out of the portal, all in one place.

Wait, I can change networks on the fly?

Yes! Network switching is enabled in the top bar so you can access your players and content and work on any network you have permission to view.

What happened to my CCMC pages?

The next question a business user may ask is, “What happened to my CCMC?” The CCMC has been replaced by the new Portal Apps feature.

Imagine an application built just for you with only the tools you need to perform your daily tasks. This is now a reality with the new X2O Portal Apps! A Portal App is a set of one or more tools designed to carry out operations for a specific workflow.

On the landing page you will see a button that describes your old CCMC. Click the button, and your custom Portal App opens in a new browser tab with the tools you need to perform your daily content management and monitoring tasks, now with the new design. Your Portal App has the same components that you used in the last release of the X2O Portal in the side menu. The side menu is omitted if your Portal App contains only one component. Commands that used to clutter the interface are now available for selection when you mouse over items in a list, and additional commands are activated in the top bar when you select a check box. Note that the tools in the Assets and Schedules tabs have been replaced by new Portal Apps.

An admin user who is used to seeing the administration tools after they log in may be wondering, “What happened to my Administrator portal?” Do not worry admin users; there is a Portal App for you too!

Click the appropriate button on the landing page and the improved Admin Portal App opens in a new browser tab with the same tools you need to administer networks and player properties, X2O players, user accounts, and change advanced settings.

Do I still need multiple Portal Apps for different networks?

Back in the early days of the X2O Platform, we had what we called a “CCMC page definition” that the administrator would import to their player network. Each sub network created below the parent had to be individually assigned to the page definition, which created multiple copies of the same CCMC. A lot of time, effort, and repeated steps were required in order to set up a network tree with many child nodes.

The new Portal Apps feature in release 5.5 changes all that. The assignment of sub networks has been removed from the equation, and all networks created below the parent automatically have access to new Portal Apps for a quicker set up.

Can I switch back to my old CCMC?

The short answer to this question is, unfortunately, “No.”

Rest assured that the transition to this new way of working will be easy for end users, as the new and improved X2O Portal is designed to simplify your day-to-day activities. The ability to create custom Portal Apps that suit virtually any workflow is also a major plus.

What are the new Portal Apps I should drool over?

Asset Manager

Asset ManagerThe new Asset Manager is used to quickly upload and easily manage a library of graphics, video, and other assets in a central repository. Drag-and-drop files directly to the browser tab for immediate upload to the asset library.

The Tile View lets you preview assets with extra-large thumbnails, or you can select the new List View to see more details and sort assets by Label, Type, Category, and more!

The Editor pane on the right of the interface lets you quickly edit the important properties of the selected asset, add tags, and set Go Live, Expiration, and Purge dates for time-sensitive content.

Included in the Asset Manager are the new Review and Approval tools for content managers to control the quality of assets and review content in a more structured, process-driven manner.

Schedule Manager

Schedule ManagerThe new Schedule Manager presents a simple drag-and-drop interface to quickly schedule events in a civil calendar. The calendar week begins on Sunday, and the time uses the 24-hour clock.

The tabs on the left provide the Playlists, Channels, and Assets available for scheduling. Users can drag multiple channels or assets into the same event time frame to embed a playlist directly in the calendar. Recurring schedules are created by extending the event across multiple calendar days.

Double-click an event in the calendar to open the event details, and update the date and time frame as required. You can also open the Playlist Builder from the event details to edit the embedded playlist, and create or modify a recurring schedule.

The Events tab on the right lets you review the scheduled events, and open the event details. The Assigned Players tab is available so you can review the players assigned to the selected schedule, and immediately assign additional players.

Channel Designer

Channel DesignerThe Channel Designer has been updated to include new interface controls for improved usability. The enhanced object browser has a new Search box so users can quickly find objects for their channels.

The most important properties required for the set-up immediately load when you double-click an object in the workspace, and you can also access the complete property sheet for advanced options. We have added online help for objects with information on how to configure the object properties. Finally, there are new style sheets you can select to preview channels with different color themes, text formats, and backgrounds.

Campaign Manager

Campaign ManagerThe new Campaign Manager lets you create and manage your advertising campaigns.

Enter basic information about the new campaign, select the target slot in the program block, and quickly add assets and select target players in the easy-to-use Advertising Campaign Editor tool.

The Calendar View presents a visual overview of the campaigns that are active or scheduled to run in each slot of your program block. The calendar lets you see which slots are available to new advertisers, and you can re-schedule the campaigns or move them to a different slot as required in the drag-and-drop interface. Choose the List View to quickly see and filter based on the current status, target slot, advertiser and contract number, and the start and end dates for each ad campaign.

The Campaign Manager also includes a View Report feature that lets you generate and export “proof of play” reports for the assets in a campaign so advertisers know that their ads have played and how frequently.

Object Manager

Object ManagerThe new Object Manager lets you preview objects in the browser, edit object properties (including the display name, description, and default position), export objects and move them from a staging environment and import them to the live server, and assign objects to networks.
